HALLOWEEN SPECIAL: PATRICK HORVATH

PINNLAND EMIRE isn’t exactly a horror site but two of my favorite films do happen to fall under that genre. I’ve said everything I have to say about Trouble Every Day & Parents (on this site, the pink smoke and various podcasts) so I reached out to PINNLAND EMPIRE-favorite Patrick Horvath to illustrate my love for these films just in time for Halloween (in addition to being a talented filmmaker, Horvath is also a talented artist that you should all be following on twitter at @PatrickHorvath).

Enjoy & happy Halloween...

THE SCHOOL OF MAYA DEREN PART TWO: THE CONTINUED INFLUENCE ON DAVID LYNCH

In this second part of The School Of Maya Deren (mostly Meshes Of The Afternoon), we're going to take a look at some more moving imagery & themes from Deren's work that, to me, clearly rubbed off on Lynch from, framing & camera angles (Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me) to violence & suspense (Blue Velvet)

THE SCHOOL OF MAYA DEREN PART ONE: THE INFLUENCE ON DAVID LYNCH

I'm hardly the first person to make a connection between Maya Deren & David Lynch. Both are (primarily) L.A.-based surreal/experimental filmmakers with a lot of visual similarities (it should also be noted that both filmmakers have a fascination with black & white imagery as well).

But, like I say in my School Of Tarkovsky explorations, it's one thing to write and/or talk about the visual (and sometimes thematic) similarities between Maya Deren & David Lynch, and another thing to actually show it.

Below are some of my favorite examples of what I feel are Maya Deren's subconscious influence on David Lynch through the years (mostly starting from Lost Highway up to now).

THE SCHOOL OF DREYER PART TWO: MOVING IMAGERY

This edition of the school of Dreyer is less focused/structured in comparison to part one but I think you'll find a few valid examples of his (possible) influence nonetheless.

Enjoy...

The Passion Of Joan Of Arc / Mad Max: Fury Road

Water From The Land / There Will Be Blood

The Passion Of Joan Of Arc / The Phantom Thread

Though this is very much a PTA original in the way it playfully fudges the line between fastidiousness and spontaneity, the film it recalls the most is 1964’s Gertrud, the dour final work by the Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer. Both films are concerned with the mysteries of love, but employing a unique (and uniquely austere) dramatic approach, they manage to drill right down to love’s masochistic core - Davey Jenkins, Little White Lies

Vampyr / Terminator 2

The Passion Of Joan Of Arc / Jeanette: The Childhood of Joan Of Arc

MUBI: Camille Claudel 1915 was inspired by the artist’s medical records and correspondence with friends and family. Was Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc a big influence on your own approach?

Bruno Dumont: Yes. There were transcripts of Joan of Arc’s trial [that Dreyer used] and also both women were prisoners. So they are in the same state and both are tragic.

They Took The Ferry / Sleepwalkers
