THE SCHOOL OF TARKOVSKY PART 20: MOVING IMAGERY

I keep thinking I've run out of comparisons to the films of Tarkovsky but here we are.

Enjoy...

The Sacrifice / Broken Flowers

Andrei Rublev / Broken Flowers

Solaris / Fallen Angels

The sleeping family...
Stalker / Poltergeist

The Sacrifice / Sonatine

Given Lars Von Trier's fascination with Tarkovsky early on in his career, I'm convinced the ending of his student film; Image Of Relief was a reference to the opening scene of Ivan's Childhood...
Rising figures in Ivan's Childhood & Image Of Relief

Ivan's Childhood /
Come & See

Solaris / Claire Dolan

Again - not only did Alexander Sokurov know Tarkovsky personally, but he has openly praised his work and sited him as an influence since the start of his career so I'm willing to bet this comparison below is pretty on point...
Solaris / Mother & Son

Stalker / Annihilation

Solaris / Miami Vice

and more Malick/Tarkovsky comparisons...
Ivan's Childhood /
Tree Of Life

Ivan's Childhood / The New World

The Mirror / Fire Walk With Me

Ivan's Childhood / The Spirit Of The Beehive
Solaris / Morvern Callar
The Mirror / The Turin Horse

THE SCHOOL OF CHANTAL AKERMAN PART 5: THE INFLUENCE ON MICHAEL HANEKE CONTINUED...

This exploration in to the visual & (sometimes) thematic similarities between the films of Chantal Akerman & Michael Haneke is a little different from part one (click here to view part one).
Instead of chopping up 2-4 seconds out of a particular scene, I went with 10-12 second long (unbroken) takes to hammer home my theory/belief that Akerman had some kind of subconscious influence on Haneke. And if not that, their films are still similar in terms of; ambiance (both directors explore the sometimes cold ambiance of Europe), color palettes (grays, blacks, dark blues, browns, etc), themes (depression & loneliness) and framing (you'll notice half of the comparisons below are centered)

I know at first glance some of these may seem vague. There's lots of movies with scenes of people sitting in the back of a car or moving around in their kitchen. You're someone who isn't in to slightly abstract thoughts and/or comparisons, perhaps some Kurosawa/Star Wars comparisons are more fitting for you.

enjoy...

And as a bonus, see how Akerman influenced even younger filmmakers like Markus Schlienzer (far right) through Haneke (middle).
For those that don't know, Schlienzer worked with/for Haneke during his Austrian period...

THE SCHOOL OF CHANTAL AKERMAN PART 4: LODGE KERRIGAN

Lodge Kerrigan’s films are all his own. All bias opinions aside (he is a PINNLAND EMPIRE favorite), I can’t think of any other director who makes the films he does. Like other great filmmakers, his work doesn’t come without influence (both direct & indirect/subconscious). If you listen to the commentary track on the criterion release of his debut Clean, Shaven, Kerrigan shouts out films like The Tenant & Repulsion on more than one occasion as a source of inspiration (inspiration not influence).

With him being so open about the films that drive his own work, it isn’t too farfetched to assume other filmmakers inspire & influence him.

Lodge Kerrigan is on record shouting out the works of Chantal Akerman. While some of these comparisons below may seem like a reach (and others are absolutely not a reach) they all fall under the umbrella of being influenced/inspired by the work of Chantal Akerman.

It should be noted that outside of specific visual moments and mild thematic similarities, Akerman & Kerrigan make very different films (performances, editing, etc). These are the kinds of comparisons I love. It’s very unique (and a little difficult) to make movies that are all your own while still tipping your hat to a filmmaker that played a role shaping your love of/for cinema & filmmaking.

Note the similar framing, editing, outfits & positioning of the actors.
