THE ACCOUNTANT 2

The most fascinating thing about The Accountant 2 is that the tone and overall vibe is quite different from the first film. And it works a whole lot better this time around! It’s obviously a sequel but also feels like a redo/reinterpretation with some of the same characters. The first film certainly had a few lighthearted moments but the tone was mostly serious (there’s a whole separate piece of writing to be done on how autism and/or the spectrum are portrayed in the movie but that’s not what we’re here for right now). Instead of a serious action thriller where Affleck’s Christian Wolff is trying to protect a nosey accountant from being killed after uncovering an embezzlement scheme - we get a sort of buddy cop movie with Affleck’s Wolff and Jon Bernthal’s Braxton. The director is still the same which makes the movie’s tonal shift even more strange. Anna Kendrick doesn’t return this time around and JK Simmon’s “Ray” is only in the opening scene. There is still a similar operative this time around. Wolff and Braxton are tasked with trying to save a group of trafficked migrants (one specific migrant has a special set of gifts).

In addition to the buddy cop genre, visually, The Accountant 2 took from a lot of fun classic action movies: Bar fights, desert shootouts, bodies crashing through plate glass windows, intense standoffs with bad guys, etc.

Lethal Weapon 2 / The Accountant 2

Lethal Weapon / The Accountant 2

The Terminator / Lethal weapon
Blue Steel / The Accountant 2

This is nowhere near as good as Lethal Weapon or Terminator or even Blue Steel but it’s still a fun watch (you would think that goes without saying but I’m letting it be known just in case).

My only gripe here is that the movie is 132 minutes. All the aforementioned classic movies that The Accountant 2 borrows/steals/copies from are all under two hours. A 2 hour and 12 minute Account sequel is just unnecessary (there’s an entire subplot that could have been condensed or completely removed). If Lethal Weapon 2 could do everything in under 2 hours then The Accountant 2 should be able to do the same. Runtime aside, this is still a pretty ok movie that I expected to be pointless that left me entertained.
