Normally I get very jealous when anyone but me writes about anything Alice Houri-related. I'm almost certain no other fan of hers besides me traveled from the U.S., through Barcelona and on to Paris to meet and hang out with her. So its pretty much a fact that I'm her biggest fan. But I'll make an exception for John Cribbs. If you follow my blog, you'd know that I'm on a quest to write about every Claire Denis feature film. I already have blog entries for 'Beau Travail' and '35 Shots Of Rum' set for November. After that, 'Chocolat' and 'Nenette & Boni' will be her only 2 features I haven't written about on Pinnland Empire. 'Nenette & Boni' may be the ONE Claire Denis film i may never write about because, like i said in my Alice Houri blog entry, everything that needs to be said about 'Neneete & Boni' has already been said right here...
'The White Ribbon' is one of the definitive classics of the 21st century. There's no need for an argument. I loved this film SO much, not only did i see it twice at the NYFF, but i also saw it at the film forum TWICE. For those of you who don't know and have never been there before, the film forum wasn't designed for someone my size to sit comfortably, so that's saying something. I wrote a quick 2 paragraph review on this for the old Flud site, but it doesn't come close to what Chris Funderburg (another Pinksmoke writer) had to say about it...
Marissa may be the last of my myspace/facebook/Internet buddies that I have yet to meet in real life (she almost came to my birthday at Anthology Film Archives and we missed each other by a day at the sunshine for a 'Blue Velvet' midnight screening). Anyway, the whole Bob Crane story has always fascinated me. I like home movies, pornography and I'm also a huge Willem Dafoe fan (no matter how many forgettable movies he's done in the last few years outside of 'Antichrist') so naturally I like 'Auto-Focus'. Contrary to what some of you may believe, I AM a Monte Hellman fan, no matter how much I didn't like 'Road To Nowhere' (i recently watched it again and STILL dislike it). In this epic review of Brad Steven's autobiography, Toronto Native (who I had the pleasure of meeting at TIFF this year) goes deep in to the career and filmography of the counter culture legend. This is a pretty hefty read, but worth it...
Michael Winterbottom can sometimes get caught up in that Steven Soderbergh work ethic where its quantity over quality (releasing 2 movies in one year or steadily releasing disappointing movies every single year). But in my opinion, when he's on, he's ON. 'The Trip' is actually something I wrote about on here a while back, but lets get another perspective on the latest Coogan/Winterbottom collaboration (I liked this so much I saw it in the theater twice). I'm also convinced that John Cribbs and recently married Doug Frye (the person responsible for the review below) are long lost cousins (i guess its the facial hair thing, I dunno...).
